Gazi Ercel, one of the former leaders of the Central Bank, passed away.

The Central Bank announced his death in a statement. The Center’s statement included the following:

“We have learned with sadness the death of Mr. Gazi Erçel, who served as the Central Bank Leader in the middle of 1996-2001. We wish God’s mercy on him, our condolences to his family and all his relatives.”


Born in 1945, Erçel graduated from Ankara University, Faculty of Political Sciences, Department of Finance and Economics in 1967. He earned his master’s degree from Vanderbilt University in 1976. He worked as a Sworn Auditor of Banks, Deputy General Manager of the Treasury, Executive Director of the IMF, Treasury General Manager of the Undersecretariat of Treasury and Foreign Trade, Member of the Board of Directors at Yaşar Holding, Executive Board Member of Tütünbank and Member of the Deputy Board of Directors in various organizations of Yaşar Cluster, General Manager of Tobaccobank.

He was appointed as the Chairman of the Central Bank in 1996. He resigned from his mission on March 1, 2001, due to the 2001 Turkish economic crisis caused by the constitutional booklet crisis in February 2001. Finally, he gave lectures as a lecturer at Istanbul Aydın University, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences.
