Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu held a joint press conference with North Macedonia Foreign Minister Bujar Osmani in Ankara.

Minister Çavuşoğlu mentioned that if Greece does not give up on arming the islands, the sovereignty of the islands will be discussed.

For Greece, Çavuşoğlu said, “They are very successful in crying even in the most unfair situation. They hug your face, when they come back, hate, grudge, bragging, slander. These are not situations that befit politicians. Greece should respond properly to the letters we wrote, if it does not end this violation, the islands’ sovereignty debates. We’ve already started,” he said.

The headlines from Çavuşoğlu’s statements are as follows:

“Greece’s state after the President’s dinner with Mitsotakis is not surprising, but it must be the reason for such a strong opposition to Turkey. You will both say let’s solve our problems at dinner in the middle, and you will go and go wrong with Turkey on every platform. This is a move that does not fit into NATO alliance.

Why is Greece aggressive? Greece’s violation of the status of the islands given to it on the condition of not arming it with the 1923 Lausanne, 1947 Paris Agreement and we brought this up. We wrote two letters to the UN. If Greece does not give up on this violation, the sovereignty of these islands will be discussed. It’s so clear and precise. You will abide by the agreements. They get aggressive because they can’t respond to the letters we send in a generic way. The letters we wrote explain the situation in a generic context. Politicians in Greece have a complex. They think that if they do not attack Turkey every day, they will not be able to bring joy to the people. The politicians in Greece are in a complex, this is actually the explanation for the inferiority complex. We have no such concerns.

We had problems with other countries as well, but we are normalizing our relations with many countries at the moment.

The situation in Greece is deplorable. They do one thing very well. Even in the most unfair situation, they are very good at explaining how right they are and crying. They suddenly come and hug you, they will, when you turn your back, hatred, grudge, bragging, slander… These are not things that suit politicians. Let Greece respond to our letters with dignity. If this violation does not end, the sovereignty of the islands will be discussed, that’s all we say.”
