Colombian Defense Minister Diego Molano confirmed in a statement in the city of Cartagena that Duarte, whose real name is Miguel Botache Santanilla, was killed in a shootout in Venezuela.
Emphasizing that Duarte is one of the most wanted wrongdoers, Molano said, “The intelligence information we have received reveals that Gentil Duarte died in the conflict in the Venezuelan state of Zulia.”
According to local media reports, Duarte died in a clash with drug trafficking clusters.

Duarte, a former commander of the FARC, who signed a peace treaty with the government in November 2016, joined the invitation to return to the armed effort on 29 August 2019.
Duarte, who refused to be involved in the peace process reached with the government, was expelled by the FARC administration of the period on 15 December 2016.
Duarte was at the negotiating table in the ongoing peace talks in Havana. Duarte, one of the FARC commanders who was the first to withdraw from the talks, wanted to reorganize the FARC in blocks and gather them under one roof.

Santrich, 53, whose real name is Seuxis Paucias Hernandez Solarte, one of the valuable names of the FARC, died in an ambush organized by the Colombian army commandos on May 17, 2021.
Santrich, a former commander of the FARC, who signed a peace treaty with the government in November 2016 in Colombia, made an invitation to return to the armed effort on August 29, 2019.
Conflicts that lasted for more than half a century in Colombia, a Latin American country with a population of more than 48 million, caused the death of nearly 260 thousand people and the emigration of more than 6 million people.
