Specialist Clinical Psychologist Mustafa Arı, who started his explanation by first mentioning the difference between horror and fear, stated that anxiety is a feeling towards something whose object is reasonable, but the object of fear is not obvious. Clarifying the issue by saying, “For example, we are afraid of spiders, but we are not worried when we see spiders,” Arı emphasized that an unknown triggers anxiety more. Mustafa Arı, who underlined that the phenomenon defined as the test problem is not a concern for the test itself, said, “The uncertainty about what will happen as a result of the exam is the factor that causes people to panic.”

Referring to the main factors that create the exam rush, Bee said:

“Basic factors; The meaning that a person attributes to the test, the expectations of the person’s family and close circle, and the unrealistic intentions of the person. In other words, establishing a direct relationship in the middle of the concepts of being loved, being a good person, being accepted together with success in the exam is one of the factors that create fear. The rush for the test increases as the test approaches. The further we are from a threshold, the less it disturbs us spiritually. The closer you get, the more uneasiness and trouble increase.”

Explaining the physical and mental conditions seen in children with exam anxiety, Bee mentioned that symptoms such as palpitations, nausea and sweating are physiological symptoms. Bee underlined that when the fear of test is seen, the children’s feedback such as “I can’t even do the questions I can do” is the biggest test worry tip for families, and added that the significant decrease in the success of the children is one of the most obvious features of the test anxiety.

Arı, who also offered suggestions and information about the do’s and don’ts to deal with anxiety, spoke in the following form:

“On the basis of the exam plan, there are two different situations. First of all, the child has not worked and is fussy. There isn’t much to do here. Here, in fact, a regret or a conscience are the feelings that come to the fore. We can think of small-scale agitations, which are heard at a certain level and do not affect the ordinary course of life, as understanding the seriousness of the event rather than worry. The main point to be addressed here is this: Unrealistic ideas. In other words, the child worked, has a good command of the subjects, and has no shortcomings, but is in a strange concern. This is an important test bustle. We must first emphasize that there is a very important connection between sleep and rush in ways of coping. A healthy and real-time sleep reduces the level of anxiety. Apart from that, proper nutrition is very valuable. I also recommend students to take regular walks in the open air for 15-30 minutes. Breathing exercises and real breathing also reduce tension and anxiety. My suggestion about what not to do is definitely not to eat or drink anything from outside in the last 10 days before the exam. They may get sick, their stomachs may be upset, which increases their tension a lot. Another person is that too many tests should not be brought up in the environment of friends and family. This is not helpful.”

Stating that the families of children with high fear of exams are too perfectionist, try to raise their children more successfully, compare their children with other people and give examples, the exam is almost over, Arı said that the words and approaches to continue solving the exam are very wrong, and that everyone who will take the exam should be evaluated primarily in terms of lack of attention. stressed the need.

Pointing out that if the child has a lack of attention or problems in focusing due to situations that are beyond his control, Bee pointed out that it is very valuable to resolve this spiritually from the beginning of the period and said, “Parents, knowing the steps of their child’s education, enter into a dialogue with the child. Because the family is comfortable and the person who will take the exam gets much more motivated when he receives such a more conscious approach from the family. Instead of sentences like “don’t do it, you can’t go out, you can’t go, you’ve finished so many topics, there are fewer issues left, you can overcome this, I trust you,” reduces anxiety and tension. The child is motivated,” he said.

Arı said, “If the threshold is exceeded, functionality is impaired, sleep and nutrition disorders are experienced, there is a lot of sweating, crying, a very significant increase in anger and a significant deterioration in social life while studying, then it is beneficial for families to apply to a specialist”. He also stated that applying to a specialist is sometimes not enough in terms of treatment.

Bee finally said:

“This is a situation that requires significant evaluation. If we receive an application in the early period, we first measure the attention level of the individual. On the other hand, we play a role in the proper organization of the dialogues between the family and the child. In addition, we support the child in shaping the daily life of the child in a quality way without leaving the social life and without leaving the test. It is also valuable that young people, especially in their last year, are not overwhelmed with lessons. Children who are stuck in the middle of the school-classroom-study triangle may have more trouble. Spaces should also be created for the child to breathe.”
