Since the mid-state “peace agreement” with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) in November 2016, people’s presidents and activists defending the rights of indigenous communities have been the object of assassinations.
In the village of La Clarida in the town of Vegachi in the Antioquia administrative region, unidentified armed individuals assassinated another community president.
The Colombian Institute for Development and Peace Studies (Indepaz) condemned the incident, stating that the leader was attacked while conducting field research. The community leader, who was taken to the hospital by helicopter, could not be saved.
According to Indepaz data, since the beginning of the year, 78 heads of society have been assassinated in the country, and since November 2016, this number has exceeded 1340.
