The United Nations (UN) 2021 Food Waste Index Report shows that more than 7.7 million tons of food is wasted in Turkey every year. According to the report, 93 kilograms of food per person goes to waste every year in Turkey.
Kitchen Affairs Manager Content Producer Ülkühan Gemi stated that the food images published on social media platforms include deceptive elements that cause waste of utensils, and said, “In the preparation step of the food images, the recipes should be tried many times and after the best result, the shooting stage should be started. However, because this process takes a long time, the recipes are mostly transferred without being tried. This reflects negatively on Turkey’s waste report,” he said.
THE SITUATION IS NO DIFFERENT IN THE WORLD
Food waste continues to increase its impact day by day in the world. According to the researches, 1.3 billion tons of food goes to waste every year around the world, and about 25 thousand people die every day due to hunger in the world.
According to the statements made by the United Nations (UN) Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), about one-third of all food produced each year is wasted.
While only 2.7 billion tons of the 4 billion tons of food produced every year is consumed, the annual cost of wasted foods corresponding to 1.3 billion tons of food is determined as 1 trillion dollars. It has been determined that 840 million hungry people in the world can be fed even with the recovery of only a quarter of the food that is wasted on a global scale.
